Parc National de la Gaspésie, Quebec - Steph and I hiked the same trail twice in one day in the hopes of spotting a moose. On the first hike, we heard a male and female calling out to each other (it’s the beginning of mating season, so we could imagine what the calls were about), but didn’t see any moose. At sunset, we returned, and never could have imagined that we’d have the opportunity to witness a female moose, fully aware of our presence, resting in a bed of grass and wildflowers for several minutes. She didn’t mind the small group of human onlookers, and eventually stretched out her long, ambling legs and pushed herself up to standing, shook off her nap, and proceeded to scratch herself on a baby fir tree for several minutes, stopping only to nibble periodically on its branches. She looked over at us a few times. No doubt wondering why these silly, bipedal mammals were so in awe of her every mundane move. We giggled softly as she licked and scratched at her tail, snorted with satisfaction, and crunched her way through the tall grass. We smiled in delight as she stretched her neck and pricked her ears towards when she heard the call of a moose far down the slope, out of sight. The sun sank deeper behind the autumn tinged mountains, and as darkness enveloped the trail we bid farewell to our moose friend. It was the first I’ve ever seen, and I hope not the last on our journey through Canada and the northern U.S. 🫎🌲
Upstate NY - Raccoon family Part I: Babies! 👶🦝 I have become obsessed with watching the daily routine of this momma raccoon and her three babies living in the tree outside our bedroom window. Momma always keeps a watchful eye over her babies, even when she tries to sneak in a little naptime for herself. She constantly fusses, grooms, and pulls them back into the nest when they stray too far, though she lets them explore a little more each day. She nurses for hours every day, lying calmly on her back while the little ones jump and chatter on her belly. Every time I hear those little chittery sounds I run to the window to see which baby is poking their head out or climbing up the inside of the hollow tree. Some people turn their noses up at raccoons, possums, crows, squirrels and other “common” animals; but I find them endlessly fascinating for their intelligence, curiosity, and resilience. Watching parents and offspring of any species shows us how similar we all are in our desire to nurture, provide and feel love and safety, and be given a chance to thrive in this world.

Austin, Texas - Butterfly beauties and flourishing flowers, the result of a wet spring bleeding into a muggy summer. I will never not be mesmerized by wildlife, particularly when multiple species interact (like the butterfly and bee pictured in the second photo).

On my latest cross-country adventure, I’ve been delighted to spot fireflies, butterflies, lizards, groundhogs, robins, blue jays, hawks, cardinals, and lots and lots of cicadas (flying, crawling, flopping, and dying all over the streets of Nashville). What a messy, beautiful, complicated, chaotic, cacophonous world to be born into.

Santa Barbara, CA - Dogs of Earth Day…a little late, but every day is Earth Day, right?! 🌎🐶 There were almost as many pups as people at this year’s Earth Day celebration, and I was all for it.

Tonto National Forest, AZ - Happy #worldwildlifeday from the Salt River, where wild bands of horses relish in winter grasses, birds of prey perch in nests over the river, and a myriad of species coexist in a harsh but beautiful ecosystem. What an honor to get just a peek at some of the amazing sites in this region of the southwest. The wild horses here are descendants of mustangs that have roamed free since at least the time of Spanish missionaries in the 1600s, and are protected in this part of their range. Have you been to the Salt River to see the wild horses?

Fullerton, CA - I love when photography allows me to discover an environment or species that’s new to me! Pictured here are Egyptian geese: a sweet little gosling and its protective father lurking in the shadows.
🪿
This striking “goose” (in actuality more closely related to shelducks) is native to Africa, mainly the eastern and southern parts of the continent; it has also been introduced widely across Europe and parts of the U.S. In some places it is considered naturalized, and in others a nuisance. Egyptian Geese pair up and form solid bonds. During mating and nesting, the males become very aggressive—this father stood casually on one leg, but made continual hissing noises to let any passers-by know not to mess with his baby. This family unit (mom, not pictured, was watching over her baby too) was one of many groups of birds at Craig Regional Preserve. We saw bitterns, ducks, Canadian geese, songbirds, crows, and more during a winter morning stroll. Plus we had a beautiful snowy backdrop provided by the San Gabriel Mountains.
